Lunch at the Dory and Dardanel 00Comment 00Comments

The John Dory opens for lunch tomorrow, per Eater. On the much, much cheaper side, midtown Mediterranean spot Dardanel tells us it’s launching a $9.95 prix fixe lunch (more of a combo, really) that includes a starter (soup, salad, hummus, eggplant salad, cacik, or spicy mashed vegetables) as well as your choice of a tilapia fish fillet or beef, lamb, or chicken kebab.

This new neighborhood spot specializing in seafood fills a huge void for flavorful, reasonably priced fare in the far East 50s. While fish takes center stage - with everything from steamed mussels to stuffed flounder and grilled whole Dorado - chef Aytekin Yar is a master of meats, too, and draws inspiration for his savory menu from Israel, Morocco, Spain and Portugal. The vibe is inviting and relaxing, with banquettes covered in cushions surrounded by cocoa walls and soft lighting.
Must-have meal: Mezes like zucchini pancakes with garlic yogurt sauce (below, $8); eggplant salad ($5); and cheese rolls stuffed with feta ($6). For a main, grilled lamb meatballs ($15) or the brick-oven salmon topped with a sauce of basil, garlic and walnuts. And for dessert, the phyllo halvah pie ($5).
Soundtrack: World grooves and Middle Eastern pop
